Bellplate Cover

This is a project that I’ve been thinking about for a bit, but have not put into use in an exhibition yet. Building off the success of my torx screw cap cover, I designed this cover to fit over a bellplate and attach to a torx security screw affixing the plate to the wall.

Quite framed works of art to be secured to the wall with bellplates, a common piece of hardware. The benefits are that it keeps the works of art flush to the wall, which is often ideal for photographs or works of art on paper. Using d-rings causes a cant at the top of the work, which is usually undesirable. Also, quite often contemporary frames for works on paper and photographs have quite narrow frames, and bellplates tend to look better than having a d-ring hanging half visible on the frame, and a bulky hook in the wall. They also provide security, when attached using a security screw.

One complication is that most times it is requested that the bellplates be painted to match the color of the gallery walls. This can lead to couriers standing over your shoulder while you pain the bellplates, and generally a build up of paint on the bellplates which can become messy looking. The goal of this cover is to allow for them to be printed in advance of install, and painted to match the walls where the works will be installed. Then they are just popped on, staying in place through the security screw.
